Stamp Collecting
Stamp collecting is one of the oldest and most popular hobbies in the world. It is estimated that over 20 million individuals partake in this hobby in the United States alone. Stamp collecting differs from the common practice of philately, which concerns the study and analyzing of stamps, many individuals will begin stamp collections without worrying about the origin or value of the items. Certain individuals have attempted to combine the two aspects of stamps to create stamp collections that are purchased with hopes of the items becoming more profitable in the future.
The first stamp was called the Penny Black and was issued by Britain in 1840 and depicted a young Queen Elizabeth. Children were primarily the age group that collected stamps during those times and adults saw the activity as a childish endeavor. During the late 1800s many of those collectors, as adults, began to systematically study the available postage stamps and published research works on their production. It was not until the 1920s that publicity about valuable stamps encouraged a large increase in the number of stamp collectors. This rapid increase in postage stamp values was largely because very few of the older stamps had been saved in good condition. Especially difficult to find were pairs, triples, and large blocks of older stamps.
After it was realized that the secondary market had a demand for rare stamps, the stamp collecting phenomenon skyrocketed in popularity and became the collectible powerhouse that it is today. Although many innovations have threatened the use of hand delivered mail, stamps and stamp collecting have remained popular throughout the world. Also, collectors tend to be just as interested in old stamps as new ones, and they would not stop collecting just because no new stamps were being introduced.

Stamp collecting equipment is a set of items that are both affordable and incredibly useful in order to accumulate a large stamp collection. An archival storybook with clear plastic sleeves is the best way to keep stamps in good condition as well as give your stamp collection organization. A magnifying glass is essential for the die hard stamp collector in order to spot imperfections, inconsistencies, and see the works of art up close. Stamp tongs are also an essential piece of stamp collecting equipment. Similar to tweezers with rounded edges to protect the fragile items, handling stamp collections with these prevent damage done from skin oil and other substances on the hands that could harm the stamp collection.
